Global Priorities Institute

The Global Priorities Institute (GPI) is a proposed cause prioritization research center, based in Oxford.1

History

I think this used to be called the “Oxford Institute for Effective Altruism”. Not sure what caused the name change. Ryan Carey writes: “the Global Priorities Institute was initially going to be the EA Institute, but the name had to be switched to sound more academically respectable”.

The center grew out of a project run by the Centre for Effective Altruism.2

The domain name for the website, globalprioritiesinstitute.org, was registered in July 2017.3

As of October 2017, the center is based at Oxford University but is still “undertaking the university procedures for becoming an Oxford institute”.4

In December 2017, GPI published a research agenda.5

In December 2017, Michelle Hutchinson of GPI was interviewed by 80,000 Hours.6
